PION-PION SCATTERING AND K$sup +-$ $Yields$ 3$pi$ DECAY

The effects of final state pi - pi interactions on the spectrum of K/ sup plus or minus / plus or minus 3 pi decay were studied by dispersion relation methods. In the approximations adopted a set of linear integral equations were used for finding the amplitudes of the K/sup plus or minus / yields 3 pi decay. The kernels in these equations depend on on the pi - pi S- wave scattering amplitudes. An approximate solution for these equations was obtained by iteration and the departures from a purely statistical spectrum for the decay are related to pi - pi S-wave scattering. The latter in turn was assumed to be well represented with a scattering length structure. The K/sup plus or minus / yields 3 pi spectrum then was parametrized by two quantities, the T = 0 and T = 2 pi - pi S-wave scattering lengths, a/sub 0/ and a/sub 2/. Such experimental results as presently exist indicate that a/sub 2/--a/sub 0/ is positive and that roughly a/sub 2/--a/sub 0/ approx equal 0.7, in units of the pi Compton wavelength. (auth)
