THE DIRECT SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF BORON, MOLYBDENUM, AND MANGANESE IN URANIUM TETRAFLUORIDE

A method is described for the determination of some impurities in uranium tetrafluoride. The sample is mixed with 25% of alumina, containing Ge and V as the internal standard elements, and arced in d-c arc of 8 amp, in graphite electrodes. Alumina prevents uranium excitation, transforming volatile uranium tetrafluoride into the refractory uranium oxide during the exposure, and in the same time acts as the spectroscopic carrier. The elements studied are representative of metallic fluorides having different volatilities: boron for very volatile fluorides, molybdenum for medium volatile fluorides, and mangandese for the less volatile fluorides. The sensitivities reached are respectively: 0.1 ppm of boron, 0.5 ppm of molybdenum, 0.5 ppm of manganese in UF/sub 4/. A procedure is described for the preparation of the standard mixture for the working curves. Some experiments were made to obtain the reproducibility data for these three elements: the standard deviations are below 10% for B and Mo, and below 15% for Mn. (auth)
