PROTON NUCLEAR SPIN RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY. XI. A CARBON-13 ISOTOPE EFFECT

The nuclear spin resonance shielding of C-H was determined in (CH/sub 3/ )/sub 4/Si, CH/sub 3/I, CH/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/, and CHCl/sub 3/ f or the isotopes C/ sup 12/ and C/sup 13/. The difference in shielding for these isotopes, T/sub 13/ - T/sub 12/, was +42, +12, +42, and +59 x 10/sup -4/ ppm for the respective compounds. This difference is of the same sign but only about 1/40 as large as the corresponding effect on fluorine. This factor, 1/40, has also been observed for the deuterium isotope effect on proton and fluorine shieldings. (D.L.C.)
