Rapid Ligand Exchange in Zirconium(IV) Chelates

The hypothesis that rapid ligand exchange occurs in zirconium(IV) chelates was verified by the nmr spectra of mixtures of tetrakis-(2,4- pentanediono)-Zr(IV), Zr(acac)/sub 4/, and tetrakis -(1, 1, 1 -trifluoro-2,4- pentanediono)-Z r(IV), Zr(tfac)/sub 4/. Because of rapid exchange of the ligands, a solution of Zr(acac)/sub 6/ and Zr(tfac)/sub 4/ contains five compounds: Zr(acac)(tfac)/sub 3/, and Zr(tfac)/sub 4/. (P.C.H.)
