MECHANISMS OF VOLUME SELF-DIFFUSION IN $alpha$-Fe AND $gamma$-Fe

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
Mechanisms of volume self-diffusion in alpha -Fe and gamma -Fe were examined by the method of Kuczynski. This method is based on an expression which relates the dimensions of a sintered interface between two particles to D, the coefficient of volume self-diffusion. The values of D for alpha - and gamma - Fe were determined to be <6 x 10/sp -14/ cm/sup 2//sec at 885 deg C and 3.5 x 10/ sup -13/ cm/sup 2//sec at 935 deg C, respectively. Good agreement was obtained for the D value of gamma -Fe compared with the value of D for alpha -Fe when compared to tracer data. It is concluded that the sintered fillets in the gamma -Fe (fcc structure) were established via a defect mechanism, presumed to be vacancies. A diffusion mechanism which does not involve lattice defects is postulated to be primarily responsible for volume diffusion in alpha -Fe (bcc structure). (C.J.G.)
