VOCs removal from industrial wastewater via air stripping - an operating experience
This paper presents design criteria and operating experience of an air stripping unit installed to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from process wastewater in a phenol and acetone manufacturing facility. The unit also removes contaminants from the ground water within the plant for OCSPF compliance. The desorbed hydrocarbon are destroyed in a thermal oxidizer. Air stripping is a fast, efficient, and economical approach to treating waste streams with varying characteristics such as contaminant strength and flows. Evaluation of some of the alternatives to an air stripping process is also discussed. The system was installed in Allied Signal`s chemical manufacturing in Philadelphia, PA., in 1991 and has been operating satisfactorily. Some of the post start-up problems and their solutions, and necessary process modification are also discussed.
