POTASSIUM, CESIUM-137 AND RUBIDIUM-86 RELATIONSHIPS IN PLANT UPTAKE, SOIL DIFFUSION RATES AND IRRIGATION PRACTICES
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4167753
Addition of potassium to the nutrient substrate reduced Cs/sup 137/ and Rb/sup 86/ uptake by plants, but less than expected from an assumed physiological equivalence of the ions. Discrimination between Cs/sup 137/-K or Rb/sup 86/-K varied with the concentration of potassium in the substrate. Cs/sup 137/ was not moved appreciably through soil columns by water. Fifty per cent was leached from acid soil columns with 0.1 N KCl, but none was removed from alkaline soil. Flooding did not increase Cs/sup 137/ uptake by rice plants over that observed when soil was not flooded. (auth)
