A thermal design of a 1 kA / 6.6 kV class superconducting fault current limiter was discussed, and specifications for a current lead system were obtained. According to these specifications, a 1 kA rms current lead system has been designed and tested. The current lead system was composed of (Bi,Pb){sub 2}Sr{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 10+x} tube leads (used in 77 - 4 K range), Cu leads (used in 300 - 77 K), a liquid helium vessel and a 77 K refrigerator, which cools the thermal anchor of the current leads and a radiation shield. The current lead system was placed in a vacuum vessel and cooled by thermal conduction. This lead system successfully transported 1 kA rms alternating current for 3 hours under steady-state temperature distribution. The total heat load to 4 K for 1 kA rms current was 3.5 W. The authors have a prospect of developing a small cooling system for a 1 kA class fault current limiter.
