Thermo-fluiddynamic aspect of noisy film boiling phenomena in He II

Conference ·
OSTI ID:416647
Noisy film boiling appears in He II in the case of large heat flux and large hydrostatic pressure. The thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena of noisy boiling on a planar heater are studied with the aid of Schlieren and shadowgraph visualization methods. For a pulsative heating, transient nucleate boiling first appears and then film boiling starts and, furthermore, may proceed to noisy boiling if the hydrostatic pressure is sufficiently large. The frequency at which a large vapor bubble repeats expansion-and-crush quasi-regularly is investigated from the visualization video images. Forced transition to noisy boiling is investigated by imposing small oscillating thermal disturbance superposed on constant heat flux. The effect of oscillating thermal disturbance is found to be so large at rather low frequencies between 0.05 and 100 Hz that the transition takes place even at the half value of the steady critical heat flux.
