A method based on the surface Beltramian is presented to numerically generate orthogonal surface coordinates. The procedure yields a system of two-dimensional coupled equations of the surface coordinates. The Beltramian being a second order elliptic partial differential equation allows application of Dirichlet and/or Neumann boundary conditions on all boundaries. The method is general and can be applied when the surface is known by a surface equation as well as when defined by a set of digitized points. Since orthogonality is the fundamental property of the generating scheme grid smoothness is a natural outcome of the generation. Preliminary examples illustrating the potential of the method are presented.
