A finite volume discretization of the Euler equations and the Navier Stokes equations for fluid flow can lead to first order truncation errors if the control volumes do not possess central symmetry. In this paper a modified equation is derived first for the linear advection, equation and then for the case of incompressible laminax flow over a flat plate. The solution of these equations on an unstructured mesh consisting of a uniform array of triangles is examined in some detail and expressions are found for the error that is induced by a single column of non-centrally symmetric control volumes.
