Laser frequency control with birefringent polarizing filters

Journal Article · · Sov. Phys. - Tech. Phys. (Engl. Transl.), v. 20, no. 2, pp. 216-222

Four types of electrooptical birefringent polarizing filters are proposed and designed. The selectivity is analyzed and the characteristics of various filters are compared. The use and construction of such filters for controlling laser frequencies are discussed. Data are reported on several crystals which seem promising for use in such filters, and the use of such filters to control the lasing mode is reported. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that the lasing frequency can be tuned over essentially the entire luminescence band of the active medium; electro-optical control makes it possible to program the frequency.
