AN INVESTIGATION OF INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS FOR VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4164583
The preparation, fabrication, and properties of intermetallic compcunds under development for service at 2300 to 3000 tained F are described. The compounds, principally beryllides, have exhibited strengths, as measured by the modulus-of-rupture test, of 40,000 psi at 2700 tained F and resistance to oxidation for 100 hours at 2800 tained F and have indicated good thernnal conductivity. The compounds were prepared by solid-stute reactions and fabricated chiefly by hot-pressing techniques. Oxidation tests were made in dry sir at 2500 to 3000 tained F and in moist air (57 tained F dew point) at 2300 to 2500 tained F. Transverse- rupture tests were carried out at 2300, 2500, and 2750 tained F. Room- temperature hardness data and melting points are reported for some compounds. Thermal-expansion and thermal-conductivity data for selected compounds are also presented. The intermetallic compounds included in the investigations were NbAl/ sub 3/, TaAl/sub 3/, CrBe/sub 2/, MoBe/sub 12/, Nb/sub 2/Be/sub 17/, NbBe/sub 12/ , TaBe /sub 2/, Ta/sub 2/Be/sub 3/ TaBe/sub 12/, TiBe/sub 2/, TiBe/sub 12/, ZrBe/ sub 13/, Cr/sub 3/Si, Ti/sub 5/Si/ sub 3/, TiSi, and TiSi/sub 2/, with CrBe/sub 2/ , TaBe/sub 2/, TiBe/sub 2/, and the silicides recei ving only a very limited effort (chiefly oxidation tests). The more promising intermetallic compounds for hightemperature applications are concluded to be ZrBe/sub 13/' Nb/sub 2/Be/sub 17/ , NbBe/sub 12/, Ta/sub 2/Be/sub 17/, and TaBe/sub 12/. (auth)
