The relaxation times of the vibration energy in a broad temperature range up to 10,000 deg K were measured by determining the distribution of the vibration-excited O behind a strong shock wave (Vestn. Mosk. Univ., III: No. 2, 52 (1962)); under the conditions used, multiquantum transitions became marked beyond 6000 to 7000 deg K. This work was continued by reviewing the- results obtained up to 7000 deg K, assuming that the excitation of the vibrations is due to single-quantum transitions. The factors considered included the nature of the bombarding particles and the effect of intermolecular forces on the probability of the impact excitation of vibrations in diatomic molecules. Experiments were carried out for measuring the time of relaxation of the vibration energy of O/sub 2/ molecules in mixtures with He, Ar, and Xe. The relaxation times measured were in the 0.2 to 4-microsecond range. The excitation probability was calculated by determining the relative effectiveness of the various atoms, M on the basis of the expression P/sub O/sub 2/M//Pc/sub O/sub 2/O/sub 2/. It was found that the Ar at om is 6 to 7 times less effective than the O/sub 2/ molecule in the 2500 to 5000 deg K range; at higher temperatures the effectiveness of Ar increased. The effectiveness of He was close to that of O/sub 2/, while Xe was quiet ineffective; the above ratio is about 1 in the first case and about 0.03 in the second. This behavior is attributed to the difference of the atomic masses of Ar, He, and Xe. (TTT)
