Isotopic Exchange Reactions. VI. Halogen Exchange in the System BCl 3 -POCl 3 1,2
The isotopic halogen exchange between POCl/sub 3/ and BCl/sub 3/ was investigated with the use of Cl/sup 36/ labeled reactants. While a rapid (complete within one minute) exchange is noted at O deg when POCl/sub 3/ is present in excess, as well as in an equimolar mixture of the two components, no halogen exchange is observed in an excess of BCl/sub 3/. These data are interpreted on the. basis of a structure previously proposed for the addition compound in which the bonding is through the phosphoryl oxygen. A mechanism for the rapid halogen exchange in POCl/sub 3/ rich systems is suggested, which does not necessitate the formation of a free tetrachloroborate anion as proposed in earlier studies of halogen exchanges in BCl/sub 3/.
