COMPARISON OF SOLUBILITY DATA FOR IRRADIATED POLYPROPYLENE

A comparison was made of previous data on the irradiation of polypropylene in a gamma source, Van de Graaff electron generator, and in a nuclear reactor. It is illustrated that when the solubility function, S + S/sup 1/2/ is plotted against gamma dose, instead of total energy deposition (gamma dose/total dose = 0.565), for the reactor-irradiated samples, close agreement between the data for isotactic annealed film specimens and those for gamma irradiated isotactic film was found for 1/r values of about 0.005 to 0.04 Mrads/ sup -1/. It was also found that data for the reactor irradiated quenched isotactic film fall close to, but below the line for gamma irradiated atactic material, yielding an intercept of 0.43. However, decided differences occur for electron and gamma irradiated atactic polymer with the intercepts varying by a factor of two. The results were found to be in contrast to the previous conclusion that atactic and isotactic polypropylene have the sam G(S) value. (P.C.H.)
