A mass spectrometer is described which is intended for analyzing the composition of a gaseous mixture and the light products of the interaction between a hydrogen-helium plasma and the wall in the ducts used to exhaust the limiters and diverters. With an extremely modest resulting power in the dispersive elements the mass spectrometer is able to carry out quantitative analysis of the composition of a beam of light ions with similar values of M/Z ({approximately} 10{sup {minus}3}-10{sup {minus}5}) and heavy impurities. The device has a wide dynamic range (9 decades) and makes possible simultaneous detection of two different ion components with similar M/Z (e.g., D{sub 2}{sup +} and {sup 4}He{sup +}). 2 refs., 2 figs.
