AN APPLICATION OF THE THEORY OF MANY-FERMION SYSTEMS TO LIQUID HELIUM-THREE

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4162648
The theory of fermion Green's functions of the Matsubara type was developed with a view to their utilization in the calculation of thermodynamic properties of liquid He/sup 3/. The theory of 1- and 2-particle Green's functions was developed in more detail using the single particle spectral function and self-energy function, as well as a generalization of the Brueckner T- function. The 2-body correlation approximation was introduced, and the practicality of numerical calculations at that and further levels of approximation was discussed. Only gas-like properties could be predicted for non- zero temperatures because of mathematical difficulties. A modified Hartree-Fock calculation gave results for zero temperature which were not in agreement with measured data, but which were in fair agreement with the results obtained in the calculation of Brueckner and Gammel.
