A set of equations similar to the well-known Kodemtsev-Pogutse system is used to describe helical perturbations in a plasma-filled torus with large aspect ratio, together with the motion of the plasma column in the directions of the major radius, which, like the helical motion itself, can occur without perturbing the toroidal field. It is shown that this motion is excited by helical perturbations in the initial stage of the discharge and can give rise to a spike in the plasma skin current inside the column. The growth of the helical perturbation can excite eigenmodes of the plasma column in the direction of the major radius. 21 refs., 4 figs.
