LEVELS IN Bi$sup 210$ FROM THE Bi$sup 209$(d,p) REACTION

Q values and differential cross sections were measured for nuclear states in Bi/sup 210/ excited by the Bi/sup 209/(d,p) reaction. A previously unobserved group with Q = 2.35 plus or minus 0.03 Mev was found, corresponding to a state with probable protonneutron assignment (h/sub 9/2/ g/sub 9/2/). The observed Q value for this state is in good agreement with the Q value expected for the 1-- ground state of RaE. Groups of states with mean excitation of 0.41, 0.88 and 1.4, 2.02, 2.56, 2.81, 3.15, and 4.03 Mev were found, and neutron assignments of g/sup 9/2/, i/sub 11/2/, d/sub 3/2/, s/sub 1/2/, g/sub 7/2/, d/sub 3/2/, and (h/sub 11/2) were suggested. A comparison with theoretical calculations by Newby and Konopinski for the (h/sub 9/2/g/sub 9/2/) group of states gives further support to their observation that a calculation of levels in the neighborhood of Pb/sup 208/ is far less accurate when the extra-core interaction type is proton-neutron than when it is neutron-neutron or proton- proton.
