SOME COMMENTS ON THE U$sup 232$ AND Th$sup 228$ PROBLEMS IN RECYCLED Th-U FUELS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4160850
The problems associated with recycling Th-U fuel in SGR type reactors are reviewed. It is concluded that after a few cycles some means of remotely refabricating the fuel will be required. This results from the production of U/ sup 232, principally by an (n,2n) reaction on Th/sup 232/, and the inability to remove either the U/sup 232/ or its first daughter, Th/sup 228/, by chemical means. Both the Th and the U acquire very high gamma activities a short time after processing so that sufficient time for direct refabrication probably does not exist. (auth)
