Experimental installation of a conical plasma source and vacuum chamber capable of producing plasma clusters with velocities exceeding 10/sup 7/ cm/sec is described. The plasma cluster velocities as a function of condenser bank potential for a source with a reverse conductor and a source with a spiral reverse conductor were analyzed. The results showed that a spiral reverse conductor increases cluster velocity. Electric probe measurements showed that at 16 kw the average number of ions in a cluster was plus or minus x 10/sup 15/ cm/ sup -3/ at the source and plus or minus x 10/sup 11/ cm/su p -3/ at 70 cm from the source. The reverse spiral conductor produced a velocity of 3 x 10/sup 7/ cm/ sec, indicating a potential for producing deuterium or tritium clusters with velocities exceeding 3 x 10/sup 7/ cm/sec. (R.V.J.)
