Particle prcduction by cosmic primaries was studied both theoretically and experimentally. A mcdel describing meson production in N-N and N-nucleus collisions in terms of excited nucleons was developed. Collisions in CNO and AgBr between 100 and 1600 Bev were calculated. The pcssibility of meson production by a process similar to that of Cherenkov radiation of photons was examined at extremely high energies. Preliminary experimental results are reported. (W.D.M.)
