CORROSION RESISTANCE OF ANNEALED PREOXIDIZED ZIRCALOY-2
An evaluation was made of the effect of various stressrelief annealing parameters on the subsequent corrosion resistance and hydrogen up-take tendencies of preoxidized Zircaloy-2. The effect of annealing times of one, two, and five hours at temperatures of 752, 842, 1022, and 1112 deg F were evaluated. The data showed no significant effect of annealing one, two, or five hours at 752 or 842 deg F on the subsequent corrosion of preoxidized Zircaloy-2 in 680 deg F water. Also, annealing one, two, or five hours at 752 or 842 deg F or one or two hours at 1022 deg F has no effect on the corrosion of the material in 750 deg F steam. All andnealing conditions that were more rigorous had significant deleterious effects. The deleterious effects of the latter conditions were attributed to changes in the anion vacancy magnitude and gradient induced in the oxide by the vacuum annealing. Hydrogen uptake data indicated that the kinetics of hydrogen pickup in 680 deg F water are not directly related to the kinetics of the corrosion reaction, but only to the magnitude of corrosion.
