Solvent extraction of Ce(III), Er, Ho, Gd, La, Nd, Sm, Tb, Y, Yb and Th from sulfuric acid by a 0.148 molar solution of diisobutylphosphoric acid in kerosene was analyzed. It was found that each of the rare earths and thorium are fully separated at a certain concentration of sulfuric acid. Extractability of rare earth and thorium dibutylphosphates is a function of their solubility and stability in sulfuric acid. Comparisons of stability according to their equilibrium constants of the reaction indicated equilibrium constant variability from lg K/sub La/ = 17.1 to lg K/sub Yb/= 21.1. Equilibrium constant for thorium was lg K/sub Th/= 24.5. (R.V.J.)
