WATER UTILITY PLANNING FOR NUCLEAR ATTACK

Journal Article · · Journal American Water Works Association (U.S.)

In view of the amount of money and effort that the federal government is putting into these warning and detection systems, it would seem illogical for people at state and local levels to give only passive support to civil defense. American Water Works Association (AWWA) Committee on Radioactivity and Civil Defense, acting in an advisory capacity to fhe Secretary of Defense, has prepared an outline for a manual on Radioactivity and Civil Defense for Water Utilities. This outline has been accepted by Office of Civil Defense (OD), which is having the manual written under an OCD contract. Inasmuch as the threat of a nuclear war may persist for generations, planning should transcend individual feelings on the merits of such planning. Civil defense is not confined to a government organization that is going to operate out of Washington after an attack; rather, civil defense depends upon each individual. To make it feasible, the individual has to do all the work. (auth)
