Assessment of supercritical fluid systems for organodesulfurization of Midwestern US coal

Conference ·
OSTI ID:41572
High sulfur Midwestern US coals can be desulfurized using supercritical fluid technology. Both organic and inorganic sulfur can be removed with high desulfurization efficiency as well as high selectivity and high clean coal yield. The process can be operated using various kinds of supercritical fluid systems as solvents. Such fluid systems exhibit very strong solvating powers, especially toward various forms of organosulfur compounds, pyrites, and inorganic sulfates. Supercritical fluid systems investigated include: pure ethanol, pure methanol, pure carbon dioxide, pure water; carbon dioxide-methanol, carbon dioxide-water, methanol-water, ethanol-water, acetone-water; and water-methanol-carbon dioxide ternary systems.
