An investigation was undertaken to determine whether or not, in the case of skin contamination from BETA and gamma emitters, it is sufficient to measure the dose received by the skin and underlying tissues simply on the basis of the emission of BETA particles. An approximate, simplified formula was established for the calculation of photon radiation. The dose delivered to the skin and underlying organs was calculated for certain radioisotopes and in various circumstances. On the strength of the findings it is suggested that account be taken in some cases of gamma radiation and that further research must be made on the problem of measuring this type of radiation with greater accuracy.
