MATERIALS FOR PORTABLE NUCLEAR REACTORS

Journal Article · · Materials in Design Eng.
OSTI ID:4156953
The properties of materials for fuel, control, and shielding for pcrtable nuclear reactors are discussed. The fuel materials can be liquid or solid and are usually enriched with U/sup 235/ to reduce size. Control rcds used include aluminum-clad cadmium and stainless steel. The properties of water, beryllium, graphite, and organic materials as moderators are discussed. The most useful reflector material for portable reactors is lead. Important savings in weight and costs are obtained when it is used in the dual role of reflector and gamma shield. Thermal shielding is not needed in small pcrtable reactors because of their low pcwer levels. Lead, concrete, and water are the most common materials used for biological shielding in portable reactors. (M.C.G.)
