ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE GRAVIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF THORIUM OXIDE IN THORIUM PHOSPHATE
The sample is dissolved in nitric acid including if necessary a bisulphate fusion. The thorium is separated by iodate precipitation, followed by hydroxide and oxalate precipitation. The oxalate precipitate is ignited to thorium oxide and weighed as such. The method is considered to be generally free from bias, although an error of --0.2% arising from rejected residue is theoretically possible. The method is suitable for the determination of thorium oxide contents of approximately 60%. At the approximately 60% thorium oxide level, the standard deviation calculated from duplicate determinations on thirty different samples by one or other of three operators is plus or minus 0.103 for a single determination.
