MINUTES OF AEC WELDING COMMITTEE MEETING HELD AT OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY ON FEBRUARY 2 AND 3, 1953

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4155307

Aspects of tipe 347 stainless steel welding are discussed, including electrode development, occurrence of cracks and fissures, corrosion, and a particular Harford corrosion problem involving metallic-arc welds. Methods for welding of stainless steel pipes were discussed including the pressure-backed butt method, a procedure developed at Oak Ridge for fabrication of pipes for the HRE, tungsten-arc welding, and the Kellogg and Crane procedures for pipe welding without backing rings. A brief outline of welding development programs currently being conducted at KAPL (concerned mostly with type 347 stainless steel) is also presented. Cone-arc welding, which has been found applicable to tube-to-header heat-exchanger assemblies involving small pipes, and a concurrent project, the evaluation of high-temperature brazing alloys are discussed and some of the welding problems connected with the HKp are briefly described (L.M.T.)
