THE V$sup 51$(p,n)Cr$sup 51$ REACTION AS AN ABSOLUTE SOURCE OF kev NEUTRONS AND THE Au$sup 197$(n,$gamma$)Au$sup 198$ CROSS SECTION IN THE kev REGION
Use of the V/sup 51/(p,n)Cr/sup 51/ reaction as a neutron source offers the possibility of accurately obtaining the neutron yield by determining from the Cr/sup 51/ disintegration rate the number of Cr/sup 51/ atoms (and hence the number of neutrons) produced during a bombardment. The Cr/sup 51/ activity can conveniently be determined by a measurement of the 0.32Mev gamma ray associated with the decay. The V/sup 51/(p,n)Cr/sup 51/ reaction yields monoenergetic neutrons up to the energy of the first-excited state of Cr/sup 51/, which is reported at about 0.75 Mev. No excited states below the 0.75 Mev state were observed. Neutron yields and angular distributions were obtained at selected energies in the range from 13 to 684 kev. Cross sections for the Au/sup 197/(n, gamma )Au/sup 198/ reaction were determined with an absolute accuracy of about plus or minus 8% and a relative accuracy of about plus or minus 5% in the neutronenergy range from 13 to 684 kev. A 0.00 plus or minus -in.-thick spherical shell of Au was irradiated at each energy by neutrons produced by the proton bombardment of a thin V target at the center of the spherical shell. The neutron flux was determined by counting the Cr/sup 51/ activity in the V target, and the capture interactions in the Au were determined by counting the 412-kev gamma rays from the Au/sup 198/ decays. Agreement with previous measurements is discussed. The theoretical cross section was calculated and is compared to the experimentally determined points. (M.P.G.)
