HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF Hg$sup 197$. AN APPLICATION OF THE LEVEL-CROSSING TECHNIQUE

Journal Article · · Journal of the Optical Society of America (U.S.)
Measurements in the 6/sup 3/P/sub 1/ state of Hg/sup 197/ yielded a hyperfine structure splitting of 23 083.4 plus or minus 6.7 Mc. Suoh accuracy was possible in a strictly optical experiment because the change in intensity of scattered light observed at a Zeemanlevel crossing is unaffected by Doppler broadening. (auth)
