Anisotropy in the shape memory effect in thermomechanically treated Fe-Mn-Si alloys
- Ibaraki Univ., Hitachi (Japan). Dept. of Materials Science
The shape memory in high Mn ferrous alloys is caused by a stress induced austenite ({gamma}) to epsilon martensite ({var_epsilon}) transformation and an {var_epsilon} {yields} {gamma} reverse transformation by heating. Otsuka et al have found a thermomechanical treatment, so called training, is effective for improvement of shape memory in Fe-Mn-Si alloys. The training consists of the repetition of slight deformation that accompanies the stress induced {var_epsilon} martensite and heating that accompanies the {var_epsilon} {yields} {gamma} reversion. The aim of this paper is to present experimental evidence in regards to anisotropic shape memory and to have a supplementary discussion on the role of training.
