The thermodynamic functions associated with the formation of ThMg/sub 2/ were determined by measuring the equilibrium vapor pressure of magnesium over the two-phase alloys. Data indicated that for the reaction 2Mg(g) + Th(s) in equilibrium ThMg/sub 2/(s) the equilibrium vapor pressure may be represented as log/sub 10/(mm Hg) = (--9130 plus or minus 210)/(T) + (10.3 plus or minus 0.3). The vapor pressure relationship of this equation may be combined with the vapor pressure data for pure solid magnesium to obtain the following free energy, in kcal per mole of compound, for the formation of ThMg/sub 2/ from the pure solid elements: DELTA F/sup o/ = --14.3 plus or minus 3.1 + (15.2 plus or minus 4.3) x 10/sup -3/ T.
