The BETA spectra of B/sup 12/ and N/sup 12/ were measured in an attempt to test the conserved-vector-current theory of BETA decay. This theory differs from the usual Fermi theory of BETA decay by the addition of a contribution to the BETA -decay current from the meson cloud'' around the nucleus. The spectra were measured with a 180 deg focusing spectrometer especially designed to permit investigation of the scattering and penetration effects pronduced by Pb and Al spectrometer baffles. The measured shape-factor parameter, a/sup -/, clearly depended on the baffle material used, and it is probable that the baffle material also affected the difference a/sup -/ - a/sup +/ . The measured difference in shape-factor parameters a/sup -/ -- al was (0.94 plus or minus 0.44)%/Mev with the Pb baffles and (0.36 plus or minus 0.23)%/Mev with Al baffles. The uncertain effects of baffle scattering and penetration make it impossible to draw definite conclusions about validity of the conserved vector theory from the results of this experiment. The spectrometer was calibrated in terms of the precisely known B/sup 12/ end-point energy. If the spectrometer calibration is assumed to be identical for the B/sup 12/ and N/sup 12/ BETA -ray sources, a precise value for the end-point energy of the N/sup 12/ spectrum may be obtained. The results for this experiment (expressed in terms of the N/sup 12/ --C/sup 12/ mass difference) are (17.34 plus or minus 0.05) Mev for the Pb baffles and (17.29 plus or minus 0.03) Mev for Al.
