Auroral, geomagnetic, and ionospheric data recorded at Sodankyla were used in this study in onder to reveal possible interconnections between the various geophysical phenomena during moderate auroral, geomagnetic, and ionospheric disturbances. Special emphasis is placed upon the phenomena in the lower ionosphere, especially upon the E/sub sr/ and E /sub sa/reflections. Diurnal and seasonal variations in the occurrence of these reflections were studied statistically and the statistics were compared with the corresponding statistics of the auroras and the geomagnetic disturbances. Finally, individual disturbances were studied and conclusions drawn as to the geometry of different reflections found in the ionograms. It is shown that oblique reflections cause many of the traces seen during distrubances, anmong them the retardation noses of a distinct group of E/subn sr/ traces. The change from E/sub sr/ te E/sub sa/ type of reflection is shown to be often gradual and related to the movement of aurora towards the place of observation. The night E layer is shown to cause typical retardation in the E/sub s/ as well as the F trace, and it should be distingaished from the oblique type of E/sub sr/. The relation between the E/sub sa/ and E/sub sf/ traces seen during disturbances is discussed. (auth)
