COPPER SPALLATION BY PROTONS WITH AN ENERGY OF 680 MEV (in German)

Journal Article · · Kernenergie (East Germany)
OSTI ID:4151208

Results are presented of a radiochemical study of the products of Cu spallation by 680-Mev protons. These results along with an interpolation of the yields of nuclei inimmediate form are not well known. They make it possible to give a complete picture of the remaining products and to draw some conclusions with regard to the different fundamental properties of the processes. The total spallation cross section of copper is 0.6 x 10/sup -24/ cm/sup 2/ or 56% of the geometric cross section. Of the total effective cross section for formation of Cu spailation products, Co, Ni, and Cu make up 60%, an impontant contribution. The yield of isotopes increased in the direction of the stable nucleus region. The spallation process in Cu nuclei caused neutrons and protons to be expelled in the ratio SIGMA n/ SIGMA p = approximately 1.3. The release of alpha particles is prob ably the result of successive expulsions of 4 nucleons. In spallation of nuclei by high-energy particles there is no evidence of effects on nuclear structure. A comparison of the characteristics of the Cu spsllation process by 680Mev protons with values obtained in research on Cu spallation by different particles with energies from 190 Mev to 2.2 Bev makes it possible to make some statements about the effects of the nature and energy-gain of the bombarding particle on the spallation process.
