The transverse oscillations of a circulating proton beam due to the interaction with positive ions are analyzed. These ions are produced by ionization of the residual gas by protons. The various instabilities are interpreted as betatron resonances caused by the ion field. A dispersion relation describing resonances of any type, including nonlinear and coupling resonances, is derived and solved. This equation can be used to analyze other instabilities, e.g., the wall instability. The first-order and second-order resonances, which drive oscillations of the center of gravity and of the transverse beam dimensions, are analyzed in detail.
