Density and density variation for the exosphere calculated from orbital perturbations of the Echo I satellite (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4149815
An objective, reproducible method was employed to approximate the mean anomaly residuals. The effect of earth albedo and solar rediation pressure on the orbital motion were taken into account. In the examined height range of 900 to 1,050 km dragdeduced densities were found to be consistently lower than was to be expected from the 1971 static diffusion model (Jacchia, 1971), especially at solar minimum. The densities show a positive correlation with solar 10.7 cm flux. Six magnetic storm events were analysed in detail to determine the course and response time of exospheric density variations with respect to geomagnetic fluctuations. In all cases increased geomagnetic activity was found to correspond to increases in density. (orig.BJ)
