COMPACT MOBILE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4147528

A compact boiling-water nuclear-reactor power-producing system operating in the epithermal neutron-energy range is capable of mobility and long-life operation. Mounted on a trailer are an electrical equipment cubical, a steam condenser, and a containment vessel. The nuclear reactor within the containment vessel has a core composed of six prism-shaped sections containing clusters of triangularly pitched fuel rods. The preferred fuel composition is a zirconium hydride--uranium alloy. The hydrogen content of the zirconium hydride is varied across the core radius in such a manner as to flatten the radial power distribution in the core. Reactor control and shutdown is accomplished by eight rotating reflector drums arranged for gang operation. The drums are constructed of nickel and hafnium hydride. Means are provided for pumping water into the reactor core, extracting steam from the core, and converting the steam to electricity. The unit is capable of providing 2 Mw(e) for a minimum full power core life of 5000 hr. (A.G.W.)
