Volumetric determination of tin in zirconium alloys and their materials (in Japanese)
A volumetric method is described for the determination of tin in zirconium alloys and their materials. The procedure is based on the direct reduction of tin to the bivalent state with metallic aluminum and iron turnings in the presence of titanous ions and the subsequent oxidation of tin with a standard potassium iodate solution in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. A sample was decomposed by hydrofluoricnitric acid mixture, followed by an addition of sulfuric acid and evaporation to fumes of sulfur trioxide. The solution prepared in this way was adjusted to (1 + 1) with respect to hydrochloric acid concentration, transferred to a reduction unit and then treated as described, where titanous ions were added to the solution to avoid the interference of dissolved oxygen in the potassium iodate solution. The method was suitable for the determination of 0.1 to 20% tin in zirconium alloys and their materials, and was superior in its simplicity and rapidity. No significant error was introduced by the presence of zirconium, titanium, aluminum, manganese, and nickel, but a large amount of chromium gave an erratic value.
