TREATMENT OF COTTON WITH RADIATION POLYMERIZED ACRYLONITRILE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4147258

A process is given for treating cotton to decrease the stiffness and increase the elongation-at-break of the cotton fibers without significantly changing the other properties. The process comprises immersing the cotton in an aqueous solution of acrylonitrile monomer, irradiating the cotton with at least 800,000 r, extracting the extraneous polymer by dimethyl formamide or dlmethyl sulfoxide, and finally washing and drying the fibers. Since the solubility of acrylonitrile in water is limited, a salt such as ZnCl/sub 2/ can be added to the solution to increase the solubility. (D.L.C.)
