ON THE DESORPTION OF RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES OF CERTAIN REPRESENTATIVES OF AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES (in Russian)
ABS>The desorption of radioactive isotopes from mosquitoes (culex pipiens pipiens L.), caddis flies (Halesus interpunctatus Zett.), and mollusks (Aplexa hypnorum L.) was studied in order to determine the retaining time in live organisms after they are transferred from a contaminated media to clean water and also to find the effect of water soluble complex ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) on incorporated radioisotopes. The tests were ruade in lakewater-filled aquariums contaminated with Sr/sup 90/, Pu/sup 106/, Cs/sup 137/, and Ce/sup 144/. The results show that EDTA aids the adsorption Process except for Sr/sup 90/. The uptake and desorption of radioactive isotopes is different for each aquatic invertebrate. The desorption of Sr/sup 90/ is slowest in mosquitoes; Cs/sup 137/ is the slowest in caddis flies; and Ce/sup 144/ is the slowest in mollusks. An intensive adsorption of Sr/sup 90/ and Ce/sup 144/ was observed during the first 2 to 4 days, after which it was stabilized; desorption of Cs/sup 137/ was much slower. In spite of a high percentage of desorption, the organisms carry a considerable amount of the radioactive substances into the clean water. (R.V.J.)
