THE (CH$sub 3$$)$$sub 2$CCOOH RADICAL IN X-IRRADIATED $alpha$- HYDROXYISOBUTYRIC ACID
Measurements were made of the anisotropy in the ESR spectra for a radical of the form RC(CH/.sub 3/)/sub 2/. A radical of this form is produced by x irradiation of a alpha -hydroxyisobutyric acid and identified with ESR. A basic sevencomponent ESR spectrum is observed, resulting from an equal interaction of the unpaired electron on the alpha -carbon with the six H nuclei of the methyl groups. The sevencomponent spectrum is split into doublets on the low-field side of the spectrum, owing to anisotropy in the hyperfine coupling constant and the g factor. The principal values of the coupling constant were found to be, in gauss, 21.7, 22.7, and 23. The orientations of the two radicals per unit cell were also determined with respect to a set of axes assigned to the crystal. (auth)
