RESEARCH IN MAGNETOGAS-DYNAMICS. Final Technical Report
Two plasma tunnels for producing ionized gas flows were constructed, and the effect of flow on the readings of Langmuir probes was investigated. The plasma boundary layer in the vicinity of the stagnation point of a blunt body in a continuum flow was studied with a Langmuir probe. The efficiency of conversion of electrical energy into the energy of directed motion of the propellent gas in a magnetically driven shock system was determined to be about 20%, using a Tee- tube arrangement. Pressure level had no systematic effect on the efficiency. Preliminary work on experiments to study the interaction of shock-ionized argon with a magnetic field and the effect of a magnetic field on the properties of the boundary layer in an electrically conductive gas is also reported.
