Induced phase transitions in TbPO$sub 4$ (in German)

A report is given on the investigations of the absorption spectrum of Tb$sup 3+$ in TbPO$sub 4$. From the slope of the spectral lines, the crystallographic and magnetic properties of TbPO$sub 4$ were found in dependence of the temperature and an external magnetic field. At the temperature Tsub(D) = (3.3 +- 0.5) K, a crystallographic phase transition from a tetragonal to a lower symmetry occurs. This transition can be described by the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect theory. Furthermore, the subsequent antiferromagnetic order state below Tsub(N) = (2.15 +- 0.10) K was spectroscopically investigated: it was shown that TbPO$sub 4$ is an induced antiferromagnet. In addition, a few measurements of the magnetization and susceptibility on TbPO$sub 4$ which preceded the optical measurements could be understood from the interpretation of the spectra. (orig./ LH)
