A CYLINDRICAL IONIZING SHOCK IN A TRANSVERSE MAGNETIC FIELD (in French)

During the study of the explosion of a filiform channel of preionized gas, a cylindrical ionizing shock being propagated in a transverse magnetic field was observed. Observation of the propagation during the first three microseconds showed that the shock is displaced in atmospheric air, its velocity is almost constant, and the shock is displaced in the transverse magnetic field created by the discharge current. By knowledge of the conditions in front of the shock and the velocity of the shock, a study was made to determine the conditions of the plasma behind the shock. It is shown that it is probable that a shock with Mach number 15 in atmospheric air is not a magnetodynamic shock. The luminance temperature was measured and varied from 9000 to 22000 deg K. (J.S.R.)
