The kinetics and reaction mechanisms of Mg alloys or pure Mg with water- saturated O/sub 2/, N/sub 2/, air and CO/sub 2/ were examined at 350 to 600 deg C. The chemical reactivity of Mg and the magnesia surface formed in the reaction are discussed in relation to the various gases. It was found that metal sublimation occurs more easily as the surrounding atmosphere is less oxidizing. The activation energy change is systematic and is temperature dependent. The inhibition of magnesium corrosion by water vapor is discussed in relation to fluoridation and when CO/sub 2/ is used. The kinetics of Mg oxidation are also examined. (J.R.D.)
