Classification and criteria for safety related electrical equipment in nuclear power plants

The inadequacies of the 1E safety classification for electrical equipment in nuclear power plants are addressed. Two safety classes are proposed and requirements for each are given. The first applies primarily to electrical equipment that must perform during or after an accident. The requirements for this class are essentially the same as those for reactor protection systems. The second class applies primarily to electrical equipment that has a safety related function, but may not be needed during or after an accident. Some requirements of the first class can be relaxed for the second class if the nuclear plant can be placed in a condition where equipment in the second class is not needed should it fail. (auth)
